How to Get Your Company Cited in Google AI Overviews and Gemini

A complete playbook for B2B brands targeting Google Gemini and AI Overview visibility. Why G2 drives 38% of Gemini citations, how schema and passage architecture drive citation pickup, and what differentiates AI Overview-cited pages from top-10 organic.

Google did not surrender the search business to OpenAI — it absorbed AI into search. AI Overviews are now the most-trafficked AI surface on the open web, and Gemini is the underlying engine. For B2B brands, Gemini visibility is no longer a "GEO" topic — it is search visibility itself.

The AI Overview is not a niche feature. It is the default Google experience for the majority of B2B research queries — and it captures the majority of attention on the SERP. A brand cited in the AI Overview is recommended to the buyer before any of the 10 blue links are read. A brand not cited is competing for residual clicks against the synthesized answer.

Why G2 dominates Gemini for B2B

Across 8,400 B2B SaaS prompts analyzed by VISIBLD in 2026, Gemini and AI Overviews cited the following surfaces:

  • G2 — 38% of citations on comparison and "best" queries.
  • Capterra — 24% for SMB and mid-market software questions.
  • TrustRadius — 11% for enterprise-tier queries.
  • Gartner Peer Insights — 9% for enterprise comparisons.
  • Brand websites — 14% when schema and FAQ architecture are strong.
  • News and press — 4%.

The implication is that Gemini GEO is largely a review-aggregator engineering problem. A brand without a complete G2 profile, recent reviews, and accurate category placement has a structural ceiling on Gemini SOV — regardless of website quality or content marketing investment.

The G2 profile completeness checklist

  1. Profile claim and verification. Vendor-claimed profiles surface in 3.2× more Gemini citations than unclaimed profiles.
  2. Category placement. Listed in primary category and 2–4 secondary categories. Misplacement is the most common source of missed citations.
  3. Feature coverage. Every product capability tagged, with screenshots and short descriptions. Gemini's retriever uses feature taxonomy for "X for Y use case" queries.
  4. Review velocity. 5+ new reviews per quarter is the empirical floor for active-profile signal. Stale profiles are de-weighted.
  5. Response to negative reviews. Vendor responses on negative reviews lift Gemini sentiment scoring measurably — and demonstrate active vendor engagement.
  6. Comparison pages claimed. "X vs [your brand]" comparison pages on G2 are heavily cited; ensure they exist for your top 5 named competitors.

Schema completeness on your own site

Gemini cites brand-owned domains 14% of the time — but only when those domains have clean, complete schema. Pages without schema rarely surface in AI Overviews regardless of organic ranking. The required schema set for B2B SaaS:

  • Organization — homepage. Includes name, logo, founder, founding date, sameAs links to LinkedIn / Crunchbase / Wikipedia.
  • WebSite — homepage. With SearchAction if you have internal search.
  • SoftwareApplication or Service — product or service pages. Includes name, description, applicationCategory, offers with price.
  • FAQPage — every page with question-and-answer content. Single most-correlated schema type with AI Overview citation pickup.
  • HowTo — process and workflow pages. Surfaces in "how do I X" query class.
  • BreadcrumbList — every page deeper than one level. Helps Gemini build site hierarchy understanding.
  • Article or BlogPosting — every blog post. Includes author, datePublished, dateModified.
  • Person — author and founder pages. Builds entity graph for E-E-A-T signal.

Passage architecture for extraction

Gemini's retriever extracts 40–80 word passages from your page and synthesizes them into the AI Overview. A page where information is distributed across paragraphs that depend on each other for meaning produces no extractable passages — and is invisible to AI Overviews even if it ranks position 1 organically.

The passage test

Take any paragraph from your page. Read it in isolation, with no surrounding context. Does it answer a complete buyer question? If yes, it is extraction-ready. If no, it needs to be rewritten as a self-contained block — typically by adding the implicit subject and replacing pronouns with named entities.

Question-anchored H2s

Every section header on a page should be phrased as the buyer question it answers. "Pricing" should be "How much does [product] cost?" "Features" should be "What does [product] do?" Question-anchored H2s function as direct retrieval anchors — Gemini matches them to buyer prompts and extracts the immediately following passage.

The pattern is uncomfortable for marketing teams used to brand-voice headers. The data is not ambiguous: pages with question-anchored H2s see 2.4× higher AI Overview citation rates than pages with brand-voice headers (VISIBLD audit dataset, 2026).

Why AI Overview-cited pages aren't always top-ranked

Traditional ranking and AI Overview citation are correlated but not identical. Pages with strong backlinks and moderate on-page optimization rank organically. Pages with strong schema, FAQ structure, and extractable passages get cited in AI Overviews. The overlap is roughly 50–60%.

For B2B brands, this is opportunity. A page ranking position 5–8 organically can be the cited source in the AI Overview — surfacing above the position 1 result for buyer attention. Schema and passage work that organic SEO ignores produces disproportionate Gemini lift.

Measuring Gemini-specific performance

  • AI Overview presence rate — % of target buyer queries where an AI Overview appears at all.
  • AI Overview citation rate — % of those overviews where your brand is cited.
  • G2 citation share — how often Gemini cites G2 specifically when answering category queries, and your G2 profile's surface rate within that.
  • Schema coverage audit — % of indexed pages with complete schema (Organization, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList minimum).
  • Brand-domain citation rate — % of Gemini citations linking to your own site vs. third-party surfaces.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Gemini and Google AI Overviews?

Gemini is Google's standalone conversational AI product. AI Overviews are AI-generated summary boxes shown above traditional search results on google.com. Both use the same underlying Gemini model family and similar citation logic, but AI Overviews appear in the search experience and have far higher traffic exposure — they served 1.5+ billion monthly users by Q1 2026. For GEO purposes, optimization for one largely benefits the other.

Why does Gemini weight G2 and review platforms so heavily?

Gemini's training and retrieval pipelines pull from Google's commercial entity graph, which has historically indexed software review aggregators (G2, Capterra, TrustRadius) as authoritative comparison sources. For "best X" and "X vs Y" buyer queries — the highest-volume B2B AI query class — Gemini cites G2 in 38% of responses and Capterra in 24% (VISIBLD analysis, 2026). Brands with weak G2 profiles have a structural ceiling on Gemini SOV.

How do AI Overviews differ from traditional Google search ranking?

Traditional ranking surfaces 10 blue links based on backlinks, on-page relevance, and Core Web Vitals. AI Overviews synthesize a single answer from 3–8 source pages selected by Gemini's retriever. Pages cited in AI Overviews are not always the same as the top 10 organic results — Gemini favors pages with strong schema, FAQ blocks, and extractable passages. A page can be cited in AI Overviews while ranking position 7+ in traditional results.

Does Gemini still cite my own website?

Yes. Gemini cites brand-owned domains more frequently than Perplexity does — approximately 14% of Gemini citations link to the brand's own site for B2B queries. Schema markup completeness, FAQPage schema, and HowTo schema are the strongest predictors of brand-domain inclusion in Gemini answers. Pages without schema rarely surface even when they have strong organic ranking.

How do I optimize for AI Overviews specifically?

Three priorities. (1) Schema completeness — Organization, Product, FAQPage, HowTo on every relevant page. (2) Passage architecture — every key claim as a self-contained 40–80 word block that makes sense in isolation. (3) Question-anchored H2s — every section header phrased as the buyer question it answers. Pages structured this way are extraction-ready for Gemini's retriever and consistently surface in AI Overviews.

Will optimizing for Gemini hurt my traditional SEO?

No. Gemini optimization improvements (schema, FAQ blocks, extractable passages, fast page speed) are also Google's SEO best practices. The 30% overlap between SEO and GEO is concentrated in Gemini-specific work. The risk is the opposite: B2B sites that ignore GEO are losing AI Overview citation share to competitors who optimized first, regardless of organic ranking.
