Local Business GEO: How Professional Service Firms Get Found by AI

When buyers ask AI for the best lawyer, doctor, accountant, or contractor in their area, AI cites Google Business Profile, industry directories, and review platforms. The local services GEO playbook.

By VISIBLD · Jordan Neville

The buyer journey for finding a local lawyer, doctor, accountant, or contractor used to be Google Maps plus a few directory checks. By 2026, an increasing share of those buyers are starting with an AI conversation: "I need a [profession] in [city] who specializes in [specific situation] — who should I consider?" The firms cited at that moment win the consideration set. This post is the playbook for being one of them.

The five highest-leverage local services surfaces

1. Google Business Profile (completeness + velocity)

Profile completeness — every field, photos at category-relevant depth, services breakdown, hours, attributes. Review velocity — sustained Google reviews matter more than peak volume. Recent reviews carry more weight than old reviews. Profile activity (posts, photo updates, Q&A response) signals "active business" to Google's local algorithms, which feeds Gemini directly.

2. Industry-specific directories

  • Legal: Avvo (highest weight), Martindale-Hubbell, Justia, Findlaw, Super Lawyers
  • Medical: Healthgrades, Vitals, Zocdoc, Doximity, RateMDs
  • Financial: NAPFA (CFPs), AICPA member directory, BrokerCheck
  • Home services: Angi, HomeAdvisor, Houzz (for design/remodel)
  • B2B services: Clutch, GoodFirms, agency-relevant directories

Within each profession, the dominant industry-specific directory often outweighs Yelp or general directories for AI citation.

3. LocalBusiness schema (or specialized subtype)

Implement the most specific Schema.org type available — LegalService, MedicalBusiness, AccountingService, HomeAndConstructionBusiness, etc. — with complete address, hours, services offered, areas served, and acceptance criteria. The most-skipped technical fix in local services GEO.

4. Individual practitioner LinkedIn + Person schema

For professional services where the practitioner is the brand (lawyer, doctor, financial advisor), individual LinkedIn presence drives substantial AI citation. Person schema on practitioner bio pages, consistent LinkedIn posting cadence, professional credential clarity. LLMs cite individual practitioners for "best [specialist] for [specific situation]" queries when the firm-level signal isn't strong enough alone.

5. Local press

Local newspaper coverage, business journal mentions, professional award lists. Lower volume than the other surfaces but higher per-citation weight. Local press citations train Gemini and Claude to associate the practitioner/firm with the geography and specialization.

The specialization advantage

For local services, the highest-leverage GEO position is being the cited specialist for a narrow need within your geography. "Best lawyer in Austin" is competitive. "Best Austin lawyer for SaaS contract review" is a query where one or two firms dominate. AI rerankers reward specificity; LLMs cite the firm whose positioning matches the query precisely.

For solo practitioners and boutique firms specifically, narrow specialization paired with consistent owned-site content (case studies, methodology essays, FAQ depth) outperforms broad positioning every time.

The single-location advantage

AI search is the most level playing field local services have ever had. AI rerankers don't care about chain advertising budgets — they care about specificity, review depth, schema completeness, and authentic expertise. A well-built single-location firm can consistently outrank chains on the queries that actually drive conversion.

Review strategy for local services

  1. Google reviews first. Highest weight, broadest citation. Implement systematic post-engagement review request.
  2. Industry-specific second. Avvo for legal, Healthgrades for medical, etc. Lower volume, higher per-review weight within profession-specific queries.
  3. Yelp third. Useful for restaurants and consumer-facing local services; lower for B2B local services.
  4. BBB fourth. Lower citation weight than reviews but useful for "is [firm] legit" queries.
  5. Recency matters. Sustained 3–5 reviews/month beats 50 reviews from 3 years ago. Build the steady cadence.

Frequently asked questions

What is local business GEO?

Local business GEO is the practice of making your professional or local services firm — law firm, medical practice, accounting firm, agency, contractor, etc. — legible to AI systems for queries like "best [profession] in [location]" or "how to find a [service provider] near me".

Which surfaces matter most for local services?

Google Business Profile (highest weight), industry-specific directories (Avvo for legal, Healthgrades for medical, Findlaw, etc.), Yelp, BBB, local press, LinkedIn for individual practitioners, and LocalBusiness schema on owned site.

How is local services GEO different from B2B services?

Local services GEO is primarily geographic — buyers ask AI for recommendations within a city or region. B2B services GEO is primarily expertise-driven — buyers ask AI for the best firm for a specific problem regardless of geography. Different prompt patterns, different surface priorities.

Does Google Business Profile matter for AI?

Yes — substantially. Google Business Profile feeds Gemini directly and influences ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity for location-specific queries. Profile completeness, photo depth, review velocity, and recent activity all influence AI citation rates.

What schema is required for local services?

LocalBusiness schema (or relevant subtype: LegalService, MedicalBusiness, AccountingService, etc.), Organization, Person for individual practitioners, Service for specific offerings, BreadcrumbList for site navigation, and FAQPage for service Q&A.

How important are reviews for local services GEO?

Critical. Google reviews are the primary signal across all LLMs for local service queries. Industry-specific review surfaces (Avvo for legal, Healthgrades for medical, etc.) provide secondary signal. Aim for sustained review velocity rather than peak volume — recency matters.

Can a single-location business compete with chains?

Yes — and arguably more easily than in traditional Google search. AI rerankers reward specificity (specialization, neighborhood-level relevance, depth of expertise) over scale. A single-location specialist can outrank a chain on the queries that actually convert.
